In brief – the 7 most important rules

  1. Fully charge the battery before using it for the first time.
  2. Use a charger with a LiFePO4 profile (12 V: 14.2–14.6 V). Turn off equalisation and temperature compensation.
  3. Fit a fuse on the positive cable as close to the battery as possible.
  4. Never charge below 0 °C. The BMS stops charging when it is too cold.
  5. Do not discharge below 10 V (12 V battery) – and recharge immediately if it happens.
  6. Disconnect all loads during storage, and store at approx. 60% charge.
  7. Do not change the BMS settings in the app.

Safety

  • Never short-circuit the terminals. Use insulated tools, remove rings and watches, and fit terminal covers. A short circuit can cause a fire.
  • Connect the correct polarity. Red is positive (+), black is negative (–). Reversed polarity can destroy both the battery and your equipment.
  • Never open the battery, and do not drop, puncture or crush it. An opened battery is not covered by the warranty.
  • Keep the battery away from water, open flames, hot surfaces and direct sunlight.
  • Never use a damaged battery. If it is swollen, very hot, smells or is deformed, disconnect the power immediately and contact us.
  • Never mix lithium with lead-acid, AGM or gel batteries in the same battery bank.
  • Only use a charger suitable for LiFePO4, and keep an eye on the first few charges.
  • Keep children and pets away from the battery and cables.

Unpacking and first charge

  1. Check the box and the battery for damage. Never use a damaged battery – contact us instead.
  2. Lift the battery by the handles or from underneath – never by the terminals or cables.
  3. Fully charge the battery before using it for the first time. That way the app also starts with the correct state of charge.
  4. If the battery is to be connected to others, fully charge each battery separately first.
  5. Keep the original packaging. It is designed for shipping lithium batteries and makes any return much easier.

Placement and mounting

  • Place the battery somewhere dry and protected from water and spray – away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
  • Leave a little space for air around the battery. Avoid fully enclosed boxes with no air circulation.
  • Secure the battery with brackets or straps. In a vehicle or boat, it must not be able to move during braking, in a collision or in rough seas.
  • Never mount the battery with the terminals facing down. Whether it can lie on its side depends on the model – see the product page or ask us.
  • LiFePO4 does not give off gas during normal use, so the battery can be placed indoors or in the cabin.

Cables, fuses and terminals

  • Switch off first. Switch off the charger and loads before connecting. Connect positive (+) first and negative (–) last – and the other way round when disconnecting.
  • Fuse on the positive. Fit a fuse or circuit breaker on the positive cable as close to the battery as possible. The fuse must protect the weakest link – usually the cable.
  • Size for the right current. Cables and fuses must handle the current the system draws – including at peak. Example: our 12V 100Ah can deliver 150 A continuously and 200 A peak.
  • Keep voltage drop low – below approx. 2–3%. Use cables that are as short as possible with a large enough cross-section.
  • Tighten the terminals correctly. Use the correct cable lugs and the tightening torque stated in the datasheet. Loose connections get hot.
  • Large inverters: The inrush current can cause the BMS to cut out. Ask us about solutions for large inverters.

See battery cables, cable lugs and fuses and accessories. Work on the home's 230 V installation must be carried out by an authorised electrician.

Series and parallel connection

Whether – and how many – batteries can be connected in series or parallel depends on the model. Check the product page, or ask us before connecting.

  1. Only use identical batteries: same model, same capacity and same age.
  2. Fully charge each battery separately.
  3. Measure the voltage. The batteries must be within 0.1 V of each other.
  4. Use cables of equal length and the same cross-section between the batteries.
  5. Parallel: take the positive from the battery at one end and the negative from the battery at the other end (diagonal connection), so the current is distributed evenly.
  6. Fit a fuse on each battery (parallel) or each string (series).
  7. Charge the whole bank with a charger that matches the bank's total voltage.
  8. Never mix lithium and lead-acid.

Charging

Use a charger, DC-DC charger or solar charge controller with a LiFePO4 profile – or set it manually according to the table. Lithium is fine with partial charging, but fully charge it regularly (e.g. once a month) so the BMS can balance the cells.

Charge currentTypically 0.2–0.5CTypically 0.2–0.5CTypically 0.2–0.5C

0.2–0.5C means 20–50 A per 100 Ah. Never exceed the max. charge current in the datasheet. For 36, 60 and 72 V: multiply 3.55–3.65 V by the number of cells stated in the datasheet.

Charging sources

  • Mains hook-up (230 V charger): Select the LiFePO4 profile. A lead-acid charger that stops at approx. 13.8 V will not fully charge the battery.
  • Vehicle alternator: Use a DC-DC charger (B2B). It protects the alternator and provides the correct voltage. If the vehicle has a smart alternator (Euro 6), choose a DC-DC charger with a setting for it, and connect a D+ signal from the ignition if needed.
  • Solar panels: Use an MPPT controller with a LiFePO4 profile – or set the charge voltage and float according to the table and turn off equalisation.
  • Petrol or diesel generator: Charge via a charger or inverter/charger – never directly.

If you find that the charger stops before the battery is full, read Troubleshooting.

Cold and heat

  • Charging: only above 0 °C. The BMS stops charging automatically when the battery is too cold, and resumes once it has warmed up.
  • Operation (discharging): from -20 °C to +60 °C.
  • Storage: ideally dry at 0–25 °C.

In the cold, the battery may deliver less than usual, but the capacity returns once it warms up again. It's the battery's own temperature that counts – you can see it in the app. If your motorhome or boat is laid up over winter, turn off charging from the solar panels or use a temperature sensor that stops charging in frost.

App and Bluetooth

  • All LithiumPro batteries with JK BMS: download JK BMS from the App Store or Google Play (also listed as JIKONG BMS).
  • LithiumPro 12V 50Ah (the world's smallest): download Xiaoxiang Electric – the icon is a white elephant on a blue background. If it plays up, you can use Overkill Solar (iPhone and Android) or Fusion BMS (iPhone).

How to connect

  1. Turn on Bluetooth – and on Android, also location for the app.
  2. Open the app and connect to the battery inside the app – not in your phone's Bluetooth menu.
  3. Only one phone can be connected at a time. Stay within approx. 10 m.

What you can see in the app

  • State of charge (%), voltage and current (plus = charging, minus = discharging)
  • The voltage of each cell and the difference between them
  • Temperature and cycle count

Do not change the settings. Do not tap presets such as LiFePO4, Li-ion or LTO, and do not change protection values. The BMS is set up at the factory, and changes are not covered by the warranty or your statutory rights.

Is the app showing the wrong percentage? Fully charge the battery – this resets the display to 100%.

When the BMS cuts out

The BMS protects the cells and cuts out if something is outside the normal range. Here's how to read it:

ProtectionWhat happensWhat to do
Voltage too high (overcharging)Charging is stopped. The battery can still deliver power.Check the charger settings. Charging resumes by itself.
Voltage too low (deep discharge)The output is switched off. The battery may show 0 V, and Bluetooth may be off.Remove all loads and recharge immediately. See "The battery gives no power" under Troubleshooting.
Overcurrent or short circuitThe output is switched off.Remove the cause (excessive load or short circuit). The battery usually reconnects by itself after a short while – otherwise, connect a charger.
Too cold or too hotCharging stops below 0 °C. At high temperatures, charging and/or discharging is stopped.Move the battery to a normal temperature. It restarts by itself.

Storage and winter

  1. Charge the battery to approx. 60%.
  2. Disconnect all loads and all chargers – use the main switch or remove the negative cable. Even small loads such as alarms and Bluetooth drain the battery over time.
  3. Store the battery somewhere dry, ideally at 0–25 °C.
  4. Check the state of charge every 3 months, and top up to approx. 60% again. The battery typically self-discharges by 2–3% per month.
  5. Fully charge the battery before using it again.

Maintenance and long life

  • Regularly check that the terminals are tight, clean and free of corrosion. Clean with a dry cloth.
  • Fully charge the battery from time to time (e.g. once a month) so the cells are balanced.
  • Check the cell voltages in the app. If the difference is large (over approx. 0.1 V) after a full charge, contact us.
  • Avoid running the battery completely flat again and again – and avoid constant overcharging.
  • Use a pure sine wave inverter. A modified sine wave can cause interference and damage both the BMS and sensitive equipment.
  • Use an inverter and fuses that match the battery so you don't overload it.

Troubleshooting

The battery gives no power or shows 0 V

The BMS has most likely switched the battery off due to low voltage. Remove all loads and connect a charger with a LiFePO4 profile – some chargers have a special function to "wake up" lithium batteries. Solar panels via an MPPT controller can also wake the battery. Charge as soon as possible: if the battery is left fully discharged for a long time, the cells can be permanently damaged. Contact us if it doesn't wake up.

The battery won't charge
  • Is the battery below 0 °C? Then the BMS blocks charging until it has warmed up.
  • Is the charger set to the LiFePO4 profile – and is it connected correctly?
  • Is charging switched off in the app, or has a fuse blown?
  • If the battery is fully discharged, some chargers can't "see" it. Use a charger with a lithium/wake-up function.
The charger cuts out before the battery is full

The cells are often slightly out of balance, so one cell becomes full before the others. Charge at 14.2–14.4 V (12 V) for longer so the BMS can balance them. Also check that the charger isn't set to a lead-acid profile.

The capacity is lower than expected

Possible causes: cold, imbalance between the cells, an uncalibrated percentage display, or inverter losses (often 10–15%). Fully charge the battery and test again at normal temperature.

The voltage drops a lot under load

Check cables and connections: cables that are too thin, loose terminals or corrosion cause voltage drop. Also check that the load isn't greater than the battery is designed for.

The battery cuts out when the inverter or a motor starts

The inrush current is higher than the BMS limit. Check the battery's peak current on the product page, and ask us about solutions for large inverters and motors.

The app can't connect

Connect in the app – not in your phone's Bluetooth menu. Turn on Bluetooth (and location on Android), close the app on other phones, and move close to the battery. If the battery is fully discharged, Bluetooth may be off. Also try removing the battery from your phone's Bluetooth list and connecting again.

The battery gets warm while charging

Check that the charger is suitable for LiFePO4 and that the charge current isn't too high. Place the battery so there is air around it. If it gets very hot or smells, disconnect the power and contact us.

The batteries in a parallel bank are used unevenly

This is usually caused by different cable lengths or cross-sections. Use cables of equal length, connect diagonally (positive at one end, negative at the other), and check that all terminals are tightened.

The battery is swollen, very hot or smells

Stop using it. Disconnect the charger and loads if it can be done safely, and keep your distance. Contact us on +45 60 46 84 10.

Transport, returns and disposal
